What's Inside

Message from the Executive Director
May is a month of momentum.
Across all of our programs, we are navigating the natural energy that comes with this season. For our school-age students, it is the culmination of months of hard work as the school year wraps up and they prepare for summer camp. For our preschool classrooms, which run year-round, it is a seamless transition into a season of dedicated summer fun and outdoor learning.
This month, much of our focus is on both continuity and preparation. We are helping our younger students maintain their routines while intentionally setting our older students up for success in their next chapters. This includes students transitioning to kindergarten, moving into a new grade level, or joining us for camp.
As we move forward with our transition from Happy Hall Schools to Strata Learning, this season carries an extra layer of meaning. Our growth represents a broader, long-term vision for our academy, camps, and after-school programs. While our organization is evolving to reflect the full depth of what we do, the heart of our mission and our deep commitment to this community remain exactly the same.
Thank you for your continued partnership, your trust, and for sharing this journey with us as we build the future of Strata Learning together.
Rachel Heck, Executive Director

Rotary Highlight
May is a foundational month for our Rotary community as we recognize the individuals who pour their time, talent, and heart into making our schools and city thrive. As part of our deep connection to the Rotary Club of Millbrae, we are incredibly proud to celebrate this year’s exceptional honorees.
Students of the Year: This award recognizes outstanding leadership, character, and a genuine commitment to helping others. It is inspiring to see young people who already understand the value of lifting up those around them.
Teacher of the Year & Volunteers of the Year: We are celebrating the educators and dedicated community members who go above and beyond every single day. These individuals are the backbone of our programs, ensuring our youth feel supported, challenged, and valued.
Taylor Mills Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded to support the next generation of leaders as they pursue their higher education goals. It is a beautiful way to invest in students who embody the true spirit of service above self.
These awards remind us that education and community are a collaborative effort. It takes exceptional students, dedicated staff, and selfless volunteers working together to build a strong foundation. Congratulations to all of this year’s well-deserved recipients. We are incredibly proud of the impact you make.
Small Business Spotlight
Sunrise Deli San Francisco www.sunrisedelisf.com
This month, we are incredibly proud to highlight Sunrise Deli, an absolute Bay Area institution. Their family has been part of our Happy Hall community for years, and it is a privilege to spotlight their incredible work.
First opened on Irving Street in 1984, Sunrise Deli is legendary for serving up some of the best Middle Eastern cuisine in San Francisco. If you have ever attended one of our staff or family events, chances are you have already tasted their food. They always come through with delicious catered spreads, and our teachers love them.
What sets them apart is their total commitment to scratch-made freshness. They source their ingredients locally, nothing is ever frozen or pre-packaged, and they handle their own baking daily, from their famous round sesame bread to fresh spinach pies and sweets.
The Standouts:
The Classics: Their falafel is award-winning for a reason, crispy on the outside and light on the inside. The chicken shawarma and gyro platters are consistently fresh and flavorful.
The Fresh Baking: Do not skip the daily baked goods, especially the authentic sesame bread and savory pies.
Events & Food Truck: Beyond their Irving Street restaurant, they also operate a food truck, making them a fantastic, reliable option if you need catering for your own private gatherings.
Whether you stop by their Sunset District location for a quick lunch or look into their catering for an upcoming event, Sunrise Deli is an easy recommendation.
Nominate a Small Business

Director's Message
As we wrap up another wonderful school year at Ortega Happy Hall Preschool, I want to sincerely thank all of our families for being such an important part of our preschool community. It has been a joy watching the children grow, build friendships, gain confidence, and learn new skills throughout the year.
We are so proud of all the progress the children have made socially, emotionally, and academically over the past year. Thank you for your continued support and partnership throughout the school year. Now it’s time for summer fun together!
Program Highlights
Engagement Activities
This month, our preschool class worked hard on finishing their alphabet books that they have been creating throughout the school year. The children were very excited to bring them home in their cubbies this week to share with their families. They have also been enjoying lots of free art activities using different materials like stampers, stickers, paint, and more to create wonderful collaborative works of art together. With the beautiful weather we have been having, the children have also loved spending extra time outdoors participating in fun games and activities.
Professional Development
Our preschool staff has been working hard preparing a fun and engaging summer curriculum filled with hands-on activities, creativity, and outdoor play. Throughout the summer, we will also have special guests visiting on select Fridays for the children to enjoy. In addition, our preschoolers will have the opportunity to participate in soccer and gymnastics alongside our youngest group of summer campers, helping make this summer full of fun and new experiences.
Our staff will also be participating in a Happy Hall Preschool-wide staff training on July 6th. Preschool programs will be closed that day as our team comes together for professional development.
Community Events
We enjoyed closing out the school year with our Ortega Happy Hall Ice Cream Social for both our preschool and school-age programs. It was wonderful to see so many families come together for a fun afternoon filled with sunshine, ice cream, laughter, and time spent with friends. Events like these are such a special part of our Happy Hall community, and we loved celebrating the end of a wonderful school year together.
Student Achievements
This month, our preschool class has been celebrating many exciting achievements as we prepare for Preschool Graduation on June 5th. This time of year is always bittersweet as we begin saying goodbye to some of our preschool friends who will be graduating and moving on to TK or Kindergarten in the fall. We are so proud of all they have learned and accomplished during their time with us and are excited to watch them begin their next chapter.
The children also worked hard to fill their Life Skills Gumball Chart, earning a fun Cars movie party to celebrate their accomplishment. Throughout the year, the class has shown so much growth in important life skills such as cooperation, flexibility, caring, patience, effort, and responsibility. We are incredibly proud of all the progress the children have made this school year.
Reminders
Please let us know if your child will be arriving late due to an appointment or if they will not be attending preschool for the day.
As we head into summer, please let us know about any vacations or planned absences. It helps us greatly with staffing and planning when we know which children will or will not be attending.
Please label your child’s jackets, water bottles, and belongings. Many items look very similar, and labeled items help us return belongings to the correct child more easily.
Please keep toys from home at home. Toys can easily get lost or broken and can sometimes lead to big feelings among friends.

Program Highlights
Engagement Activities
During the month of May, our classrooms stayed busy with meaningful learning experiences, creativity, and lots of fun! The children enjoyed creating special Mother’s Day art projects and gifts to take home for their loved ones. In our older classrooms, students continued working hard as they wrapped up the final letters of the alphabet and practiced important early literacy skills. Throughout the month, teachers also spent time focusing on social-emotional learning by having conversations about emotions, kindness, sharing, and what it means to work together as a respectful team in the classroom.
May also brought many exciting community-building activities for our students. We had a wonderful Spirit Week filled with fun themes including Wacky Sock Day, Sports Day, and Dress as Your Favorite Storybook Character Day! The children loved showing off their creativity and school spirit alongside their friends. We also introduced more morning yoga activities into our routines to help children stretch their bodies, calm their minds, and get ready for a successful day of learning and play.
In addition, students continued exploring sensory bins and hands-on activities that encouraged curiosity, problem-solving, and imaginative play. We were also excited to welcome several new friends into our classrooms who will be joining us throughout the summer and upcoming school year. It has been such a joy watching our classroom communities continue to grow together!
Professional Development
Last Friday, our team had a very productive and exciting staff development day! Teachers and myself spent time finalizing plans for our summer curriculum, and we have so many fun and engaging activities planned for the children. Our summer calendar will be ready to share and posted in all classrooms and on the main hallway board by June 5th.
Be sure to check each week’s schedule for spirit weeks, water play days, and special visitors who will be joining us to provide exciting hands-on learning experiences for the students. We are looking forward to an amazing summer filled with fun, creativity, and exploration!
Our teachers also spent time preparing for upcoming parent-teacher conferences by organizing and updating each child’s portfolio. In addition, classrooms were refreshed and rearranged to create inviting, cozy, and engaging spaces for the children to enjoy while keeping the environment feeling new and exciting!
Reminders
Parent-Teacher Conferences will take place on Friday, June 5th! Conferences will be held virtually through Google Meets and will be scheduled in 30-minute time slots.
Please note that our school will be closed to all students that day to allow teachers time to meet with families.
These conferences are a wonderful opportunity to connect with your child’s lead teacher and discuss the progress, growth, development, and milestones your child has achieved throughout the school year.
Lead Teachers will be sending out Google Meet sign-up links shortly, so please be sure to reserve your preferred time slot once they are shared!
